The Merritt Lineage

Family Tradition has it that about 1810 three brothers Adam, John and Aud Merritt moved from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Jacobsport, Coshocton County, Ohio.

Tradition also says that my great great grandfather John Merritt married Mary High in Virginia in 1808.  She was the daughter of John and Mary High of Pennsylvania dutch origin.

John and Mary Merritt had four boys and three girls.  They were Ann 1809 (m. Tom Snyder), Susan 1811 (m. Andrew Henderson), Ephriam 1813 (m. twice), Charles  A. 1816 (m. Rebecca Jane Williams), Adam 1818 (m. Elizabeth Baker), Elizabeth 1821, and John 1824 (m. Sarah High).

My great grandfather Charles Merritt, Sr. married Rebecca Zane Williams in Coshocton County, Ohio, February 17, 1841.  They had eight children; Amos 1842, John 1844, George 1846 (m. Harriet J. Oakley), Mary 1849 (m. Jonas Rich, Richard 1851 (m. Agnes Smith), Ellen 1855 (m. Bart Golden), Soloman 1858 and Charles 1861 (m. Mary McLaren).

Charles and Rebecca Merritt moved to Covington, Warren County, Indiana, in the fall of 1851.  In the fall of 1855 they moved to Linn County, Iowa.  After a short time in Kansas and Tama County, Iowa they finally moved to a farm three miles southeast of Norway, Iowa.

My grandfather, Richard Merritt, remained on his fathers farm his entire life.  At 39 years of age he married Agnes Smith of Norway, Iowa.  They had six children; John (m. Stella Melberg), Hazel (m. Art Plagmann), Ollie (m. Ernest Melberg), Ruth (m. David Van Auken), Clarence (m. Caroline Zuber) and Ira Lee (m. Evelyn Lund).

My father also remained on the family farm and married Caroline Zuber from the Amana Colonies June 29, 1921.  There were three girls born to this union.  Marcella (m. Leo Lemonds), Myrtle and June (m. Fred Neal).
